What kind of smog station do you need?

California has several kinds of licensed smog check stations. A test-and-repair station performs Smog Checks and emissions repairs. A test-only station performs Smog Checks but does not make emissions repairs. A STAR station meets higher performance standards to inspect all vehicles, including high-polluting vehicles, and your DMV registration renewal notice says if you need one. How much does a smog check cost in California?

BAR does not regulate inspection prices, so every station sets its own. Every station must charge the $8.25 Smog Check certificate fee and give you an estimate to approve first. See our cost guide.
